WATCH Abortion: What Will Trump Do?

According to the New York Times, the White House has proposed preserving federal funding for Planned Parenthood if the group agrees to stop providing abortions.

After a little time, the White House has confirmed this news to ABC News, and it comes as Trump and his group are working on their 1st round of budget proposals.

“As I said throughout the campaign, I am pro-life and I am deeply committed to investing in women’s health and plan to significantly increase federal funding in support of non-abortion services such as cancer screenings,” Trump affirmed in a statement. “Polling shows most of Americans oppose public funding for abortion, even those who identify as pro-choice. There is an opportunity for organizations to continue the important work they do in support of women’s health, while not providing abortion services.”

Planned Parenthood receives more than $500 million in federal funding, per an organization’s annual reports. This not-for-profit association offers a multitude of medical services, as well as cancer screenings, sexually transmitted disease testing and, most controversially, abortions. the organization affirmed that no federal funding goes to abortion.

If Trump and his administration tried to curb that funding, it won’t be the first time for the group facing Republicans set on cutting its access to operational funds. Newly, the danger of defunding came from Paul Ryan, House Speaker, who specified in January that a repeal of Obamacare may cut off funding for the group.

Cecile Richards, Planned Parenthood President, directly tweeted out her reply to Trump’s latest statement, vowing not to “back down in the face of threats or intimidation.”
